Taiz, where “strategic” becomes a solvent
Taiz returns to the story the way a hinge returns to its door: not glamorous, but decisive. A city becomes a mechanism. Push here, and elsewhere something opens—trade routes, negotiating positions, oil prices. The BBC’s rare front-line access catches that mechanism mid-motion: the war’s new acoustic signature is the drone’s buzz as prelude, then the delayed punctuation of strikes landing out of sight BBC.
What I can’t stop thinking about is how quickly our language learns to launder this. We say “chokepoint” and “corridor”—Bab al-Mandab, Europe to Asia—and the sentence quietly recruits a moral alibi. The Houthis’ seizure of Mokha and territory overlooking the strait is narrated as strategy, and it is; the BBC notes the link to rising oil prices and feared disruption. But strategy is also a solvent. It dissolves names into categories: “displaced,” “casualty,” “civilian impact.”
The reporting refuses, at least for a moment, to let the dissolving finish. Ali stays under mortar fire because goats are the thin line between terror and hunger; he sends his children away, not because he has chosen bravery, but because there is no other arithmetic available. A government fighter describes bodies they can fire over but cannot retrieve—a battlefield geometry where even grief is denied its basic rituals. In Taiz’s hospital, the beds are full; a 12-year-old girl’s brain injury is described not as a statistic but as a permanent alteration of personhood. And at a displacement camp, a disabled woman crawls for two days through shelling before a motorcyclist takes her to the camp—language itself feels obscene trying to summarize that distance.
This is what “control” means when it’s layered through checkpoints, fractured chains of command, drones, and rumor: not sovereignty, but enforcement—transactional, temporary, and paid for in civilian bodies. The unresolved question isn’t whether Taiz is strategic. It’s whether we will keep using “strategic” as permission to look away.
